#HarryPotter

discussion

Today I bring you a short discussion about Harry Potter.

It’s no secret that I love Harry Potter.  I can easily find a Harry Potter reference that fits just about every situation, I can quote the books and movies.  It is also my favorite book to movie adaptation, the movies were done extremely well, even though a lot was cut.  Every December I re-read the entire series, as I am writing this, I am halfway through book six.  Re-reading the books this year, I’m recognizing things that were not in the movies a lot easier than in years past.  But, what is it that makes Harry Potter so special? I think it’s the world that J.K. Rowling created and the characters that she put into that world.  She created the world with an amazing magic system, well-written villains that sometimes make me cringe when I think about them, and the very important aspect of friendship and family.

#HPpetpeeves

Today is my last Week of Potter post.  I didn’t post on Thursday like I originally had planned.  This post was supposed to go up on Thursday, instead it is going up today.  For my last post, I thought it would be interesting to do write about my Harry Potter pet peeves.

Yes, I have a couple Harry Potter pet peeves.  I think my biggest pet peeve would have to be when people think that it counts because they have seen the movies, but haven’t read the books.  This is something that drives me absolutely insane.  While the movies are done extremely well,  there are so many holes in them that only the books can fill.  People have asked me “does it count that I’ve seen the movies, but haven’t read the books?” And my answer is always no.  Another pet peeve of mine, which isn’t as big as my first pet peeve, is the lack of diversity.  I would have loved it if the books had more racially diverse characters.  While there were some characters of the minority, they had smaller roles, and it would have been nice to see some of them have larger, more important roles. I also hate when people spoil things when you don’t want to be spoiled, for me it’s important to make sure people have read all the books before I discuss things with them so they aren’t spoiled.  What are some of your Harry Potter pet peeves?

**I also have not yet finished reading the Cursed Child, so please no Cursed Child discussion in the comments, this also ensures that others aren’t spoiled as well.**

I tried to pick the least spoiler line from this book.  For those of you who have yet to read it, this shouldn’t be a spoiler, at least I hope not.

#T5W Books I feel differently about

top-5-wednesday

Top 5 Wednesday was originally created by Lainey from Gingerreadslainey and is now hosted by Sam from Thoughts on Tomes.  There is a Goodreads group which lists the topics.

The topic for this week is books that I feel differently about after reading them.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets– This book is one that annoys me, but it’s only because of one character and that is Professor Gilderoy Lockhart.  I get annoyed reading this book just because of him.  I don’t really think that he adds much to the book either, and the students learn absolutely nothing from him, which is something that really bothered me about this book.  While I find this book annoying, I still always enjoy it.  The only good thing Lockhart provides is comic relief.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban– I seem to love this one more and more after I re-read it.  I love how Harry really connects with Lupin, not just on a student/teacher level, but I feel that Lupin is a link to Harry’s parents that he needed.  I also love this book more because I really saw Harry’s growth as a character.  I also love how this is the only book that doesn’t have Lord Voldemort in it, he is mentioned, but isn’t physically in this book.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix This is another book that I seem to love more after reading it.  I love that Hermione rebels in this book and kind of breaks away from her goody too shoes image just a little bit.  It was Hermione’s idea to start Dumbledore’s Army, which went against Umbridge’s rules.  We all know Hermione isn’t one for breaking rules, but I loved that about her in this book.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince– After the one on one lessons between Harry and Snape, where Snape is trying to teach Harry to close is mind, I gained a better understanding of why Snape is the way he is.  When I re-read this book, I felt a lot of sadness.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows– Every time I read this one, I always feel a different way.  Sometimes, I feel like there are loose ends, and there are other times where I feel it’s the perfect conclusion.   There are also times where my feelings about this book are conflicted and I don’t know how to feel, other than the fact that I love this book.

Today I got my copy of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. I have started reading it, and you will know my thoughts at the end of the month.  I love how the book is in Hufflepuff’s colors, and was surprised to see that when I took off the dust jacket.  I was expecting the book to be Gryffindor colors, because well Harry was a Gryffindor.  The last time I was this excited for the publication of a book, was when Deathly Hallows was published.  I also didn’t get my copy until almost 7 p.m.  I waited all day for it and was hoping that it would arrive earlier than it did, so I could start reading it earlier.  I’m also going into it pretty much blind.  I’m really excited to read more and gather all my thoughts, hopefully spoiler free.  Sorry for everyone that may want me to review it earlier, but that’s not how I roll.  For those who have yet to get their copies, I hope you get them soon and haven’t been spoiled.  This will also be the 40th book I have read this year, and I felt that it was only fitting.  #KeepTheSecrets

#HappyBirthdayHarry

Today is not only Harry’s birthday, but also the publication date of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.  To celebrate Harry’s birthday, I thought it would be fun if I shared some of my favorite quotes from the series, both books and movies.

“This is the best house I’ve ever been in.”

“I will only truly have left this school when none here are loyal to me … Help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who ask for it.”

“It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”

“I don’t go looking for trouble. Trouble usually finds me.”

“The mind is not a book, to be opened at will and examined at leisure.”

“Wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure.”

“You’re just as sane as I am.”

“I don’t think you’re a waste of space…You saved my life.”

“After all this time?”

“Always,” said Snape.”

“Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all those who live without love.”

“So it all comes down to this, doesn’t it? Does the wand in your hand know its last master was Disarmed? Because if it does … I am the true master of the Elder Wand.”

“That wand’s more trouble than it’s worth. And quite honestly, I’ve had enough trouble for a life time.”

“Albus Severus, you were named for two headmasters of Hogwarts. One of them was a Slytherin and he was probably the bravest man I ever knew.”

“The scar had not pained Harry for nineteen years. All was well.”

“I’m not going home… not really.”

“Fear of a name only increases fear of the thing itself.”

“Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, when one only remembers to turn on the light.”

“I don’t care. Anywhere is better than here.”

“I didn’t put my name in that cup… I don’t want eternal glory. I just want to be…”

“First we need to find a place to practice where Umbridge won’t find out.”

“That even though we got a fight ahead of us, we’ve got one thing that Voldemort doesn’t have.”

“But I am the Chosen One.”

“Look at me. You have your mother’s eyes.”

#WeekOfPotter

Starting on Sunday July 31st, be prepared for #WeekOfPotter.  I’m doing something different, every day between Sunday the 31st and Friday August 5th, every one of my posts will be related to Harry Potter.  This includes Top Ten Tuesday, Top Five Wednesday and Friday 56.  Why am I doing a Week of Potter, well not only is the 31st Harry’s birthday, but it is also the highly anticipated publication date of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.  Cursed Child already surpassed pre-orders of Deathly Hallows and will most likely out sell it as well.  The last time I was this excited for the release of a book was in 2007 when Deathly Hallows was published.
