Today’s discussion is about books, but not just any books special edition books. I’ve seen a lot on Twitter and Bookstagram about the new special edition copies of A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab, and that is what inspired me to write this post. In my own personal collection, I only have three special edition books. I have the special edition of Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling, the one that Amazon only produced 100,000 copies of, I have the 20th-anniversary edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and then I have the special illustrated edition of The DaVinci Code by Dan Brown. Tales of Beedle the Bard was a gift, I bought Philosopher’s Stone, and I found The DaVinci Code at a library book sale. I’ve always wanted at least one UK edition of one of the Harry Potter books. As for A Darker Shade of Magic, I already have the entire trilogy in the original white hardcovers that I absolutely love. I didn’t even pre-order either one of the special editions and if anyone is wondering if I’m going to buy them in the future the answer is no. I don’t have anything against people who want to buy special editions of books, but I really don’t see the point in buying them, and I really honestly don’t need to buy any more than what I already have.
How do you feel about special editions? Do you think they are necessary? Discuss your thoughts in the comments!
I love a beautiful book cover, but I hate when multiple editions come out just for the money. I wouldn’t buy a special edition unless it was affordable and I didn’t already have a copy.
I feel like that’s the only reason why they come out is for the money. A Darker Shade of Magic was published two years ago and there’s already a special edition? I could see if it was a special anniversary edition or something but I feel like some books have special editions just for the sake of having a special edition.
Right. Anniversary editions would be okay, as long as their aren’t overpriced, but just putting out special editions for the heck of it just annoys me.
Fantastic discussion post! I loved this topic, because honestly, I never really had formed an opinion on it until reading this post. XD Honestly, I’m really not into buying the whole special edition of a book. If it was a book that was literally my favorite book of all time and if it had a gorgeous cover or it was signed or maybe had some amazing, amazing extras (more than just an exclusive short story), I might have to debate and buy it. I understand the draw and I’m jealous of the people that do decide it, but I feel like it’s just a waste when I could be buying other books out there…even if I do love the book dearly. XD Wonderful topic! 🙂
Thank you! I’m not jealous of those people at all.
The only special editions of books I have ever wanted are the different Harry Potter books.
The 20th anniversary editions or the illustrated editions? I don’t consider the illustrated editions special editions.
I want the illustrated editions and the house editions.
I have my house edition and that’s the only one that I bought because I didn’t need the other ones. I also have all the illustrated editions, but I don’t consider them to be special or limited editions.
I don’t need any of them I already have a full set I just want them for my collection.
