Today’s discussion is about Greek literature. When I think of Greek literature, I think of Homer, Sophocles, Plato, Aesop (yes, Aesop was Greek), Aristophanes and others. Have I read all of their works, not yet, but I have read quite a bit. I’ve mostly read Sophocles, Aristophanes, Plato and I learned about Aesop’s Fables at some point during my schooling. I’m slowly getting through the Iliad and the Odyssey. Recently, I loaded my Nook with classic Greek literature, what is left of it anyways. A lot of classic Greek literature is sadly lost and fragmented (incomplete), but what survives can easily be found with some patience and research. A lot of you may be wondering why I love Greek literature, it’s more poetic and lyrical, it really tells a story, and is just more beautiful. Project Guttenburg is an excellent source for classic real Greek literature. What do you think of Greek literature?
Hi Ashley, great post on my favorite subject! I love how the Kindle Store has loads of free ancient Greek lit, and also if you download a free .pdf from the net – I’ve done this with lots of Sophocles’ plays – and ‘share’ it to your kindle account then it asks you if you want to convert the file to kindle format – this is a great feature for making .pdf’s more readable on kindle apps – especially on an iPhone!
Thanks. I don’t have a kindle or read on my phone, so I don’t worry about converting files.
I ♥ Greek literature too! I’m dying to read The Iliad and The Odyssey, but they are definitely intimidating! My all-time favorite is The Oedipus Trilogy by Sophocles!
I haven’t read much Greek literature at all… but I really would like to start. Where would you recommend I start? The Odyssey?
I would start with Oedipus by Sophocles, it’s a play. After that I would go for The Iliad and then the Odyssey.
Awesome. Thank you!
Your welcome!
Hi Ashley and Megan, you might like to start here for an easy-to-read kickstarter on the Iliad and the Odyssey: https://theshieldofachilles.net/prologue/ – my blog introduces the Trojan War in order to showcase my reconstruction of Achilles’ Shield based (literally) on Homer’s description in Book 18 of the Iliad. Nice to meet you all!
*but it’s always* <– When I can, I try my best to correct my writing errors. 😀
Strange thing about Greek mythology for me is that I seem to always forget how much I enjoy it until I stumble across it in my readings. I don’t seek it out specifically, but I it’s always a pleasure to read about it. Enjoy your newly downloaded Greek novels. Happy reading!
Thank you!
I absolutely love the myths 😀 and I read parts of the Iliad and the Odyssey.
Oh, I’m reading the entire thing. I have 240 pages left of The Iliad. It’s my in between book, meaning I read it close to the end of one month and the beginning of the next instead of starting a new book.
Oh that’s actually really smart! I should do that too haha I read metamorphosis by Ovid last year, but that’s Roman literature…. Even though it could be Greek since most of it is based on Greek mythology 😀
No, The Metamorphoses is Latin/Roman Literature, just because it is based on Greek mythology it doesn’t make it Greek.
Hahhaha true. Oh well shame on me 😮 I should read more Greek Lit when I have the time ^^
You don’t need a whole lot of time to read Greek literature, plays are quick reads. And, Percy Jackson doesn’t count as Greek literature either.
